The Power of Showing Up: Rethinking Our Approach to Personal Growth
Thursday, December 26th, 2024
Going into the new year, as usual, I have been seeing a lot of posts and writings about how people plan to be newer/more improved versions of themselves. But I've been thinking, what if we all got it wrong? Maybe we have been approaching this the wrong way?
What if the key to change and being a better version isn't reinventing the whole wheel but just building on existing technology?
The Power of Consistency
There is just something about consistency, showing up every day to do what you have to do, whether at 10%, 20%, 30%... just get something done. Sometimes we as humans underestimate what those small bits of consistent actions do for us in the long term.
Like Dwayne Johnson said,
“"Success isn't always about greatness. It's about consistency. Consistent hard work leads to success. Greatness will come."
”
I like to think of it in football terms, how a league season is 38 games long, and sometimes the team who starts the season 10 games unbeaten often doesn't go on to win that title.
Look at it this way:
- Reading a page of a book every day for 365 days is 365 pages
- You want to make people happy? Decide to make one person smile every day for a year. Boom! 365 persons
- An hour every day to learn a new skill is 365 hours
More often than not, we have been conditioned to believe that we always have to put in 100% every time; anything that doesn't have maximum effort isn't worth doing. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong about trying our best, but on many occasions, this mindset creates some sort of paralysis that if we can't give 100%, we give 0%. But life isn't an all-or-nothing game. Most times progress isn't linear; it's a product of cumulative effort. Imperfect action beats perfect inaction, and some days, showing up at 20% is better than not showing up at all.
In the new year, let's move from "new year, new me" to "same me, better habits."
Let's shift our focus from dramatic transformations to steady progress. Instead of starting over, let's build upon our existing foundation. Remember: every step forward, no matter how small, is progress. The key isn't in perfect execution, but in consistent action.
Your journey doesn't need a reset button. It needs continuation, refinement, and appreciation for the path you're already on. Show up, do what you can, and trust in the power of consistency.
Merry Christmas🎄 and a Happy New Year in advance if you are reading this!
I'll see you next time around.
